A census is the procedure of systematically acquiring and recording information about the members of a given population. It is a regularly occurring and official count of a particular population. The term is used mostly in connection with national population and door-to-door censuses (to be taken every 10 years according to United Nations recommendations), agriculture, and business censuses. The term itself comes from Latin: during the Roman Republic the census was a list that kept track of all adult males fit for military service. The census can be contrasted with sampling in which information is obtained only from a subset of a population, sometimes as an Intercensal estimate. Census data is commonly used for research, business marketing, and planning as well as a base for sampling surveys. In some countries, census data is used to apportion electoral representation (sometimes controversially so - see e.g. Utah v. Evans). It is widely recognized that population and housing censuses are vital for the planning of any society. However, traditional censuses are becoming more costly. A rule of thumb for census costs in developing countries has been $1 USD per enumerated person. More realistic figures today are around $3 USD. These approximations should be taken with great care since a variable number of activities are included in different countries (e.g. enumerators can either be hired or requested from civil servants). The cost in developed countries is far higher. The cost for the 2000 census in the U.S. was estimated to be $4.5 billion USD, more than $15 per enumerated person. Alternative possibilities for retrieving data are being investigated. Nordic countries Denmark, Finland and Norway have for several years used administrative registers. Partial and sample censuses are used in France and Germany. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Where can I find information about urbanization from the Census Bureau? Q. I've been looking all over census.gov and can't find anything. What I specifically need is the percentage of the population that lives in urban areas as opposed to rural areas. Can anyone provide a link? Asked by JC - Sat Nov 14 17:46:25 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I found your page below by entering "US population percent urban rural" in the Yahoo search bar. Census information is well indexed in search engines. Just look for your information, not the census. (The Census is nearly 10 years old, and will be taken again next year.) Q. After the Census is carried out, Congressional districts are re-allocated among the states, and the boundaries of Congressional districts are re-drawn. Is this allocation done based on the population of all persons, or the population of U.S. citizens? Or some other population? Contrary to what the right wing is trying to badly say . .the White House has always been involved with the US Census . . since Nixon . . the Democrats used to yell about the Republicans not giving accurate counts for Minorities . . . Republicans used to draw up their own demographics according to white, Christian, males for voting purposes . . now that the Democrats are in control the Republicans are terrified of losing their long advantage. Serves them right . . for years the US Census has not counted the poor, the Latino's or the various minorities . . in all fairness . . that is about to change. It is hypocritical for conservative Republicans to be complaining about this . . although that is what Republicans do . .complain.
