A museum is a "permanent institution in the service of society and of its development, open to the public, which acquires, conserves, researches, communicates and exhibits the tangible and intangible heritage of humanity and its environment, for the purposes of education, study, and enjoyment", as defined by the International Council of Museums. The UK Museums Association definition (adopted 1998) is:

“ Museums enable people to explore collections for inspiration, learning and enjoyment. They are institutions that collect, safeguard and make accessible artifacts and specimens, which they hold in trust for society. ”

There are tens of thousands of museums all over the world. The museums of ancient times, such as the Musaeum of Alexandria, would be equivalent to a modern graduate institute. The modern meaning of the word can be traced to the Museum of Pergamon in Anatolia, which displayed artwork.

How do two different museums obtain the same piece of art ?
Q. This may seem like a dumb question (and I am personally ashamed for having to ask) but I saw the statue of the Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer at the Met in NYC and I know that it is also at other museums as well. Are they just replicas of the original? How do you know if it's the original? Did he do a lot of versions of it? I've always wondered that (about all of the artwork, not just Degas)

A. Like the other person said, they lend their art. But some places do have replicas of the original. Usually the original isn't on display, for many reasons. If it is, it would be heavily guarded, and probably you wouldn't be allowed as close to it as with the replicas of the original.

What are the coolest museums in New York City?
Q. I saw on TV a long time ago a museum in the City that featured contemporary art, music, etc. where people could interact with the mediums and whatnot. The whole atmosphere felt very chill and relaxed. It might've been in Brooklyn. If anyone could narrow it down for me and identify possible places which fit this description, that'd be great. While you're at it, also suggest other cool museums! Thanks.

A. I have no idea which museum you are talking about but found this list, maybe you can figure it out from there? Looks like they have some really cool looking obscure ones: I visited NYC a year ago Christmas and it was way too cold for this California girl so I spent a lot of time in the nice warm museums. The Metropolitan was beautiful, I was there for 7 hrs and I don't think I even saw 1/4 of the stuff. The Museum of Natural History was much the same way - 6 hrs and I barely touched all the stuff in there. The Guggenheim was great too and not quite as intimidating, more modern looking. Get there early the minute they open and avoid the weekends, the crowds can get pretty unbelievable.

Are there any museums containing Godzilla in Tokyo?
Q. For those who have been in Japan. Is there any exsisting museum that has Godzilla related exhibits or are there any museums that contain Japanese movie cinema as the theme? I tried looking up this info on the internet but all I found are fan websites that have nothing to do with an actual museum. Or Gojira as it's called in Japan.

A. Unfortunatly there is no permanent Godzilla exhibition in Japan. There are two locations in Tokyo where you can see a Godzilla statue. One is in Hibiya Chanter (Not Hibiya Park) www.toho.co.jp/chanter/ma p/index.html And at Toho Studio In 2002, there was a limited time exhibit.
